Retrofit Training

The Retrofit Coordinator is a critical role that is created by the PAS 2035 standard. The day-to-day activities of Coordinators are varied and include the review, specification, design and implementation oversight, and lodgement of retrofit projects with TrustMark. The role is currently in high demand and individuals can customise their workload depending on their interests - from bespoke individual retrofit and passive house projects, through to large-scale decarbonisation schemes in social housing.

This course provides all the knowledge and skills required to become an accredited Retrofit Coordinator. It features seven modules and assessments, and a final case study and interview. We are able to work with learners to customise the course delivery to their needs where possible, and are unique in our ability to offer practical site-based training. This will allow you to shadow a member of our team as well as gain practical experience in the documentation and software tools that Coordinators use in their work.

Who can apply? The course is ideal for existing built environment professionals who are looking for a career in the specification and management of retrofit projects. Applicants are required to demonstrate relevant previous experience.

Duration: Notionally 105 guided learning hours, many of which are delivered through our eLearning platform. Each module involves tutor-led sessions and we can work with candidates to tailor delivery to their requirements.

Cost: The usual cost of this course is £2300 + VAT. Government subsidy from DESNZ can reduce this to a learner contribution of £695 + VAT. Various other forms of industry sponsorship may be available to learners to further reduce or their contribution, including CITB funding support and rebates, which can reimburse certain fees once a qualification has been achieved - we will introduce these in detail on receipt of an initial application.

The Retrofit Assessor's role is to survey a dwelling and produce a series of reports that are used by the Retrofit Coordinator to specify the necessary retrofit interventions. A Retrofit Assessment usually comprises a number of items, covering energy performance, property condition, ventilation, occupancy and making some high-level suggestions for improvement of these things.

This presents an exciting opportunity for those looking for a field-based career that is presently in high demand.

Who can apply? Existing Domestic Energy Assessors who are looking to upskill to work on PAS 2035-led schemes and produce Retrofit Assessments.

Duration: Notionally 40 guided learning hours, many of which are delivered through our eLearning platform, but with tutor-led sessions. Learners can progress at a rate to suit them.

Cost: The usual cost of this course is £1300 + VAT. Government subsidy from DESNZ can reduce this to a learner contribution of £350 + VAT. CITB funding support and rebates may be able to reduce this further.

This qualification is designed to provide awareness of the challenges faced when retrofitting older, traditional or more vulnerable buildings, including solid wall properties. It is mandatory that Retrofit Coordinators and Retrofit Assessors working on such properties have this qualification.

Who can apply? This course is usually undertaken by existing DEAs, Retrofit Assessors, Retrofit Coordinators or Retrofit Designers who are looking to work on traditional (i.e., solid wall) and protected buildings within PAS 2035 risk paths B & C. However, there are no entry requirements and anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of energy efficiency and retrofit within older, traditional and historic buildings can apply.

Duration: 21 guided learning hours, many of which are delivered through our eLearning platform, with tutor-led online sessions where required. Learners can progress at a rate which suits them.

Cost: The usual cost of this course is £695 + VAT. Government subsidy from DESNZ can reduce this to a learner contribution of £150 + VAT. You may also qualify for CITB short qualifications funding for this.

The role of the Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) is to survey the energy efficiency characteristics of existing buildings and to complete calculations and reports about their energy performance. This involves use of specialist software called RdSAP, which produces an energy efficiency rating for the dwelling and results in the production of an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that is lodged on the Government's EPC register. Domestic EPCs are valid for 10 years.

Further career avenues in retrofit, such as becoming a Retrofit Assessor, often require the candidate to be a DEA first. Trade Engine and Synergy can offer DEA training to individuals who have not yet completed it. The course is delivered online by one of our expert trainers.

There are no prerequisites to admission, although candidates should have an interest in buildings and/or their construction, and basic mathematical skills will definitely help, although our tutors are used to mentoring students at all levels of ability.

We are currently administering DEA training on an ad-hoc basis, so are happy to work with candidates to arrange training dates to suit them. Our eLearning approach involves 2 days of tutor-led sessions, followed a portfolio of 5 example EPCs and some assignments.

A QMS is a set of documents, processes, procedures and policies that are assembled in a structured and version-controlled format. These implement the company's operations, data collection, processing and outputs.

Who is this for? Installer businesses looking to work in the area of domestic retrofit, especially on funded schemes.

Duration: This varies depending on your company's requirements. Preparation and training time is usually around 2-3 weeks over a series of 1-hour online sessions. You will require an external audit from a Certification Body. We will work with you in the run-up to this, to ensure you achieve certification the first time around.

Cost: A 12 month license to the Trade Engine QMS costs £495 + VAT, covering up to 4 energy efficiency measures. Additional measures can be added at £95 + VAT each, and some companies may wish to engage our consultancy services, whereby a member of our team implements their QMS and prepares them for an external audit. Most SME organisations can achieve PAS 2030 certification with our support for less than £1000.
